Milwaukee Ballet's 'The Nutcracker'

This year, the Milwaukee Ballet's holiday show "The Nutcracker" gets a new look, from costumes to choreography — and a new approach to the holiday tale. It starts with a performance at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Marcus Performing Art Center's Uihlein Hall. Tickets start at $44. ("The Nutcracker" runs through Dec. 26.) Info: milwaukeeballet.org.

The Milwaukee Hmong New Year celebration returns to State Fair Park this weekend.

Milwaukee Hmong New Year at State Fair Park

The Milwaukee Hmong New Year celebration returns Dec. 9-10 to the Wisconsin Exposition Center at State Fair Park. The celebration, with food, music, a dance competition and more, is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Admission is $6. Info: Milwaukee Hmong New Year Facebook event.

Black Arts MKE’s production of Langston Hughes' "Black Nativity" takes the stage at the Marcus Performing Arts Center’s Wilson Theater at Vogel Hall this weekend. European Village Alive! at Milwaukee Public Museum

The Milwaukee Public Museum highlights Old World holiday celebrations with European Village Alive!, in the museum's European Village from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 9-10. It's included with regular admission: $24; $20 for military, college students, and seniors 65 and older; $18 for kids ages 4-13; and free for children 3 and younger. Info: mpm.edu.

Milwaukee Recreation's Winter Wonder Woods lets you see Hawthorn Glen in a different, and festive, light Dec. 8-9 and 15-16.

Milwaukee Recreation lights up Hawthorn Glen, the recreation space and nature center at 1130 N. 60th St., for Winter Wonder Woods. The display — tens of thousands of lights in displays and along the paths in the woods — is open for timed entry starting at 5 p.m. Dec. 8-9 (and again Dec. 15-16).
