The Marquette women's volleyball team brought its brooms to West Lafayette, Indiana.

The sixth-seeded Golden Eagles swept Eastern Illinois, 25-19, 25-16, 25-14, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday.

Jenna Reitsma had 13 kills and Aubrey Hamilton added 11.

MU will play third-seeded Purdue in the second round on Friday at Holloway Gymnasium. The Boilermakers beat Fairfield on Thursday.

"I thought we played really well," MU head coach Ryan Theis said. "If we ever got in a pickle somebody made a really nice play to get us out of it. Whether it was a good secondary set and a throw off the block. Or whether it was a stuff block or a big dig in transition. I thought people stepped up to keep the lead and push further forward."

MU improved to 9-11 in the NCAA tournament since making its debut appearance in 2011.

Middle blocker Carsen Murray and Marquette, shown during a volleyball match against Wisconsin last September, beat Eastern Illinois on Thursday in an NCAA Tournament first-round match.
